Everyone that knows me will vouch for me!
The purpose of this blog is more of an experiment, to turn an uncool and very unsociable individual
into the coolest guy on the Google search engine with help from social networking web sites.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.comBlogger19125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-2567268439153213532012-04-24T05:27:00.001-07:002012-04-24T05:27:17.669-07:00Google takes Blogger to an Australian domainNotice how Blogger or Blogspot now redirects to the Australian domain name equivalent?
While I am all for all the other cool changes that have been pushed through such as new layout, location in posts, scheduling posts and more great stuff I haven't yet found.
One thing I am disappointed in is my pagerank is gone :(
I know it will eventually come back, but you would think that Google in their wisdom would be able to pass on this pagerank? Especially to the people who have supported their products.
While I am still listed in Google as the coolest guy on Google (under the old URL), will this be updated and have a negative affect? Most likely yes.
I will be watching this closely.
Unfortunately, I have had few Google related issues of late. Issues with Adwords in particular.
Pretty disappointed with their lack of human support. It feels that Google has got too big, they no longer have the time for us anymore. If you make a mistake in Adwords you get a warning pointing you to around 22 policies. I made dozens of changes but kept getting the same response until they suspended my Adwords.
The annoying thing was that I was mainly setting up ads to train up for the Adwords certification.
Well that's one product of Google's I will no longer recommend.
Recently I have even had a site removed from Google search due to a quality issue I am having trouble understanding. Spent my whole weekend cleaning up the site and removing user submitted spam etc. just to get another rejection a few weeks later.

It is a shame that my experience with a couple of divisions of Google have soured my once strong support for Google. Maybe when Google Drive is introduced this week my faith will be restored?

Blogging seems to be a major part of SEO these days so I thought I would list my favorite blogs in order of how useful I found them.

Wordpress: This is hands-down the best blogging platform on the internet. Pages seem to get listed in Google straight away! If you need a blog, go for a Wordpress blog. Site Popularity in Alexa - 18

Blogger/Blogspot: Great Blog with plenty of extra features. I found it came up second best compared to Wordpress though. Site Popularity in Alexa - 5

Tumblr: This would have been number 2, but over the last two years it has become quite slow. Site Popularity in Alexa - 45

Posterous: Great concept. You can update your blog be sending an email. However, the search engines seem to ignore it. Site Popularity in Alexa - 472

Live Journal: Good for SEO but a little limited in what you can do with it. Site Popularity in Alexa - 81

Typepad: Too early to tell. After three days my first post is still not listed in Google, very limited in what you can do. Site Popularity in Alexa - 201

(Dux Hot Water)I don't normally come here to vent, but I just got off the phone to a nice lady from Dux, who informs me that my Dux SUNPRO Gas 305 Solar Water Heater that seems to have a burnt out thermostat is no longer covered by warranty.

The original thermostat was replaced under warranty mid December 2008 after being in our new house for a year.

Ok, so we got a few years out of it, but should they burn out so frequently?

My girlfriend rang the plumber that Dux put us on to and was told that they should definitely NOT need to be replaced that often and that the unit has a computer which possibly could be also faulty as it synchronizes the solar and gas power.

I spoke to someone at Dux and they were very polite and keep their cool, even while dealing with this difficult customer. After I got around to explaining what the plumber said, and how I disappointed I was. When they replaced the first thermostat, the computer should have also been checked or replaced?

That's when I got a reaction from the lady! She became quite angry that the plumber said this. She claims the information was inaccurate and that he shouldn't have said that.

Hmm, he probably is more qualified to answer that than some lady from the Dux complaints line!

Later I got a call back. They had to ring this plumber and find out what he told me which apparently I got the story completely wrong as HE is PAID by Dux to give biased views of Dux hot water services, so he would never make up some story about a magically syncing computer that may or may not exist!

Anyone else have issues with Dux? Post them below. Or on one of the other sites full of disillusioned customers!

Dux Hot Water

Dux Hot Water Problems

If you are a representative of Dux, I would be happy for a response, however, I wouldn't expect one!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-62331786717277644612010-07-10T02:55:00.000-07:002010-07-10T03:19:02.663-07:00Coolest Guy in Melbourne for SEOWow! It has been a while since my last post on a two week challenge to become the "Coolest guy in Australia". I managed to crack the first page holding positions 7, 8 and 9, with minimal effort!
I have learned quite a lot from my search engine experiments which has lead me to quite a lot of SEO gigs around Australia.
Unfortunately it hasn't given me much time to blog as often as I would like to, but I love the challenge of taking on a new SEO project and getting results.
I am currently, between other projects, working on promoting three websites for a party planning company in Melbourne. There is a good spread of competition, but I know the odds are in my favour, thanks to a secret weapon I have. Can't give away too much just yet, but once I achieve number one rankings for the clients keywords I will post an update. But for now here are the sites I am working with:

Melbourne Venues

Melbourne Function Rooms

Christmas Party Venues

Can't wait for winter to be over! The Coolest guy on Google, is currently also the Coldest guy on Google! ;)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-54641560466768346672010-04-21T03:02:00.000-07:002010-04-21T03:40:31.782-07:00Coolest guy in Australia (update)Well, it's day 2 into my two week challenge and things seem to be going well.

I am currently on page three of Google for the search term "Coolest guy in Australia" (minus the quotes"). Not bad for a day, but I am looking for real results!

One thing that was missed in my previous post, is that Google LOVES keywords in the URL. Unfortunately blogspot ran out of room and cut Australia off the end of the URL! So this post is a bit of an addition to the first one with some cool tips for rating high in the search engines.

Having broken down keywords in the URL rates highly in Google, so it is no wonder why most SEO software for content management systems use URL re-writing to change something like www.website.com/index.php?post=213 to the title, such as www.website.com/index/coolest-guy-in-australia.html.

This is a good way to get around if you don't have a domain name with the keywords you are trying to promote. Sure it helps .... it helps a lot! But it's not the end of the world if you cant secure that keyword rich domain.

If you couldn't get www.coolestguyinaustralia.com, you could always get another name and set up some pages with these keywords e.g. www.otherdomain.com/coolest-guy-in-australia.html

Coolest Heading in Australia?

WTF? That heading doesn't even make sense? The point of this lesson, is that Google also LOVES Heading tags. Headings to Google weigh more in the Google formula than if that sentence was without the heading tags.

So, to wrap it up for the day. To get a well placed page in Google:

Keywords in URL

Keywords in Heading tags

All the best, from your future coolest guy in Australia, Jezhug ;)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-2768693686397460792010-04-20T05:29:00.000-07:002010-04-20T06:22:11.019-07:00the NEW Coolest guy in Australia (Me!)Setting myself a mini challenge. Not content with holding positions one, two and three for the natural search term "Coolest guy on Google". I now am setting myself a two week challenge to become the "Coolest guy in Australia".

I really feel that your old pal Jezhug can achieve this. How? Well Google already knows I am the coolest, but I forgot to tell the number one search engine that I am also Australian. Therefore by default I should be crowned the coolest guy in Australia also.

I am just going to rely on three techniques and allow two weeks to see if I am successful.

Use of Blogspot labels, e.g. Coolest, guy, Google ..... I have to get a post up about this vid. This guy isn't just a great skater, he seems to be the coolest at every trick in the book.

See more funny videos and funny pictures at CollegeHumor.

I decided to run a test. The results may surprise you.

The below graph is a screenshot in Alexa of the top two results for the natural Google search term of "Coolest Guy in the World". Number one is my arch-nemesis "Brad Fallon" (nah, not really, he is a really cool guy and well deserved of that number one spot). The second was the CollegeHumor website with the awesome video.

While Brads site generates high traffic it is barely a blip on the radar (that slight bump between Oct 12 and Oct 19) in comparison to CollegeHumor.

It just goes to show, you don't need massive traffic to be the number one on Google for your given search terms. You just need grab a good SEO book and build up a growing list of backlinks. Relevance will beat high traffic any day.

I know it's a bit like comparing apples from oranges as most of the traffic from CollegeHumor comes from many different sources. e.g. coming from a completely unrelated link and finding the video from the site.

But what would be more beneficial to your site? Higher rankings in the search engines or more actual traffic? For example, what if I was to leave a comment under the Coolest guy in the World video saying "That was awesome! Kind of reminds me of this video ** insert obvious link to my own site with embedded YouTube clip here **".

That comment could potentially send thousands of new visitors from a high traffic site to your own.

All is fair in love and Search Engine Optimization, so find that balance of getting to the top of Google (plus the other search engines) AND getting the traffic to your site from other sources.

Remember, you may be number one on Google today but you may not be there tomorrow ;)

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-40664138642495235552009-11-03T01:46:00.000-08:002009-11-03T03:05:04.849-08:00Re-writing the book of cool!
Well, it's been about a month since my last blog post. I have been busy working with some great clients on improving their online presence.

Thought it was time to do a quick Google search to see if Google has dumped me yet.
In Australia today it is the famous Melbourne Cup, got a place bet with "Crime Scene" who came second. Shame it didn't come in first as it had 40:1 odds!

..... Oh, sorry. Went off track there for a while, but what I was trying to explain was why Google's logo has all of the pretty hats! Now when I first started this experiment, their were no predictive results from Google. That was why I decided to go for these exact keywords. Now it shows 412,000 results. The results speak for themselves. This blog is ranked number one for the search term "Coolest Guy on Google". Coming in second is the Facebook group I set up for the Coolest Guy on Google. And in third place .... yes, me again. My Hubpage for the Coolest Guy on Google.

I believe one of the contributing factors to my success is due to my Twitter account which has a backlink to this blog. For someone who is as anti-social as myself, I have really taken to all forms of social media like a duck to water.

this has probably made me even less sociable, opting to send messages via Facebook rather than visiting them in person.

I am addicted to finding new apps and widgets to expand my social profiles. Do a Google search for "jezhug" and you will see what I mean. 1,700 results at the time of this posting! But they all serve a purpose. Everyone of them has a backlink to this blog or some other site I am promoting.

The "jezhug" Google search is a great back linking example. Why? Because jezhug is not a word. It is simply a unique nickname I picked for myself for internet use. All links with the word "jezhug" were created by me or are byproducts of my excessive internet use!

Any of the sites listed on page one are GOLD! I have set up many links, the good ones rise to the top of the search engines while the weaker ones slowly move down the list.

These page one sites are great backlinks, and if you don't set up profiles at these sites with a link to your own site, then be prepared to hand over your search engine listing spot to to someone that will ;)

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-38467337927751615832009-10-03T00:51:00.001-07:002009-10-03T01:33:46.779-07:00Save time with the Coolest internet tools around

I have just discovered http://ping.fm/ - A very powerful tool!

What is ping.fm? You can have a massive online portfolio without even owning a domain name! How? I hear you ask. There are many sites that allow you to submit content and make money from ads around the content.

I recently heard a great story from a fellow Internet Marketer who had a website that usually made him a few dollars every day from Google Adsense revenue. You can imagine his surprise when one day he logged in and found he had made over $1,000 in one day!

Why? Well, even he didn't know at first. Did Google make a mistake?

After a bit of research, he found out that one of his articles had the word "Star Wars" in it, and Yahoo had indexed his website at number one for the natural term "Star Wars". The new Star Wars movie was released and everyone flocked to his site in search of Star Wars merchandise and left via a Google Ad offering what the visitors came for!

I should point out, this guy is quite successful and has many online sources of income. You could have that too!

The best way I would recommend for you to start making money is not to look for how other people make their money online. Also, never look to make fast money. Ask yourself, "What interests me?". Everyone has a hobby or passion that separates them from the rest. If you can provide good information topics you are passionate about, then you will get visitors.

Blogging for Bucks
Blogging can be one of the best ways to make money online without a website. Why? people want to hear what real people have to say on things. For example, you have a blog post on two different televisions, pointing out all the pros and cons of both models. At the bottom of your blog post maybe you have a Google Ad or an Amazon widget advertising both models of televisions and how much someone could save by buying them online.

Does this sound easy enough? Well here are two of the best free online blogging sites around.

Blogger or Blogspot is owned by Google (No suprises there!) and is one of the most simple platforms for expressing your opinion online. It has a monetize tab up the top allowing you to set the position of the Google Adsense Ads on your page or you can add widgets to create extra sources of income such as Kontera Ads or an Amazon widget! The Amazon widget is great for bloggers as you can make commissions from products you don't own, selling anything from books to bicycles! Check out Blogspot.

Wordpress is the entrepreneurs choice for blogging. You can set up a free blog through wordpress.com or if you want to jump straight into the deep end you can buy a domain name, a hosting plan and download Wordpress at wordpress.org. If you are new to all this I would start with a free one. Wordpress has many great plugins and themes to add your own personal touches to your blog. Check out Wordpress.

Ok, so you have the blog started. It is time to up the ante!

Become a publisher
If the heading didn't scare you off, you are ready to be published. I'm not talking about writing a whole book, just a small article about something that interest you. Maybe its Scrap booking or deep sea diving! Whatever drives you, I can tell you there are other people right now looking to learn more about it! The more diverse the subject, the better chance you have of ranking highly in the search engines.

Don't despair if their are thousands of pages on your favorite topic, you can always niche it.
E.g. A Google search on photography - 259,000,000 for photography
But by adding landscape I get much less results - 16,700,000 for landscape photography

Still a scary number, but a much greater chance of making some impact in the search engines. Each post could add a different niche to your topic so you can get more visitors looking for unique content to read.

You could submit a great short article then at the bottom of the article you tell them they can find more information at your blog and give them the link!

There are two fantastic article sites that I use that also allow you to make cash from the ads around your content:

Hubpages is my personal favorite from a marketing point of view (as my previous posts suggest). It is very easy to use, has some great ways to monetize your article and Google loves it! Think carefully about your title and you could have a page one hit in Google in no time at all. Check out Hubpages.

Squidoo, like Hubpages has a huuuuge following. Plenty of ways to make money and is also very user friendly. Not as user friendly as hubpages, but is possibly more popular. Check out Squidoo.

Some key features of both of these cool sites are Amazon, Google Adsense and Ebay integration. The Ebay option is great if you say sell items on Ebay such as beads. You then put up an article about how to make a nice handmade necklace and when the reader gets to the bottom of the article they see all the items they need to make the item - directly from your Ebay listings!

For greater success, use both sites and re-spin the article to make them unique. Google may index them both highly so you can have your own spin off article your own competition.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-20060620540171103942009-09-01T14:41:00.000-07:002009-09-01T14:48:17.741-07:00Coolest and easiest way to get good Google rankings

Getting on search engines can take a lot of time. In the past it could take years to get indexed on Google. Google's theory was that, in the waiting time it would give the site owner the chance to increase the quality and quantity of information on the site! Waiting is now a thing of the past with the introduction of Sitemaps.

Get your site or blog high rankings in Google

What is a Sitemap?

A sitemap is a file (XML) that lists all of your website pages including the priority of the page. If your site is changed you can update your sitemap then let the major search engines know that it has been changed, rather than waiting for the next Googlebot to check which could take months.

You would be interested to know that this technology is quite easy to implement yourself!

Step One: Create your Sitemap

There are many free sites (providing you have less than 500 pages to be indexed) that will generate a sitemap for you. The one we will use today is at http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ once there follow the four simple steps to generate your new sitemap! After it has been generated simply save it to your computer, upload the file to your web server and move on to step two.

Step Two: Create a Webmaster account with Google, MSN and Yahoo

The major search engines have tools for webmasters to allow them to add sitemaps and notify the search engine if any changes have been made. Below is links to sign up to these search engines as a webmaster.

Google: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

Google, being by far the most popular search engine has some of the coolest tools for webmasters, allowing you to submit your sitemap and explore possible issues with site pages. It also has a nifty feature to show you what keywords rank high in Google for your site.

Bing: http://www.bing.com/webmaster

Bing (formally MSN) may not be as feature rich as Google in the way of features, but it is still a very popular search engine. We can all use more traffic, right?

Yahoo: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

Yahoo is very similar to Bing's webmaster tools. However in terms of checking what backlinks you have pointing to your site, Yahoo's Site Explorer dominates, picking up many that Google just doesn't display!

Once the account has been activated, simply navigate to the feed or sitemap area and point to where your sitemap is located. E.g. www.mysite.com.au/sitemap.xml

Step Three: Watch your traffic Increase

With more pages indexed, you should notice more visitors coming your way. If not, maybe you need to add a bit more content.

If your site sells a product, try to use selling keywords in your content. E.g. if you are selling laptops, people looking to buy one may not type into Google, "information about laptops" but they may type "laptop prices". By putting yourself in the place of your visitors you will get a much better conversion of visitors to customers and improve your bounce rate. I will explain a bit more on Search engine optimization in a future post.

Step Four: Repeat

If your site changes dramatically, repeat the steps. If your site has a few typo's, fix them then repeat. There is nothing worse than submitting your site with typo's and finding out visitors can't find your site due to misspelled keywords.

Sometimes commonly misspelled words can work in your favor, getting traffic that you would not have normally got. This strategy could be used if you have heavy competition for certain keywords, but otherwise should not be used.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-78701408461976750512009-08-24T03:44:00.000-07:002009-08-24T04:59:26.844-07:00Creating Quality backlinksIt has been almost a month since my last post. In the last day or so Google has completely flicked me from the top of the list for the natural search term "Coolest Guy on Google".

So, who is the coolest guy on Google?

Still me! Two of my back links set up to get greater rankings have taken first and second place. One is a hubpage article explaining my bizarre journey to become the "Coolest Guy on Google" and the other one is a Facebook fan club I set up for the "Coolest Guy on Google".

The only reason I set them up was to get quality back links leading to my site. Now, the number one listing I had was the http://jezhug.blogspot.com/ address not the http://coolestguyongoogle.com/ domain name, which currently is just forwarding though Godaddy to the blogspot blog.

I have no doubt that when I finally finish my free content and get my new site up I will be straight to the top of the list with the large quality of backlinks I have set up.

So how do you find good quality back links? I have a secret that I want to let you in on.

Hubpages is an excellent source for awesome back links regardless of your sites content. Allow me to demonstrate...
I do a Google search and put in my keywords, e.g. "coolest guy on google" followed by "site:hubpages.com". This brings up the best Google ranked hubpages on your keywords.

I am a hubpage member, but for this exercise you don't need to be, in fact make sure you are logged out if you are a member.

Scroll down to the bottom and put in the link you wish to promote, then some flattering comment, as below.
After posting you should be able to refresh the page and see your comment. Your name will be hyper linked with the back link to your site. Some Hubbers set their comments to be moderated for approval first, so I find nice comments are your best option rather than slagging off their article! The end result ...
There you go. It has two major benefits, it makes someone feel great about the article they have worked hard to create and has given you one very high quality back link. Google loves Hubpages! How else would it have it taken my number one position (temporarily!).

I usually repeat this for the first couple of Google result pages to get the maximum amount of free quality back links. And I did it all without having to request for them or have one of those ugly link exchange banners at the bottom of my site.

Oh, I know it says under the part where you submit your comment not to use it to promote sites, but I promise not to tell if you don't. ;)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-92028341099700409092009-07-28T02:53:00.000-07:002009-07-28T04:22:57.710-07:00Yeah! Will Google still think I am the coolest guy tomorrow, once this post is updated? Do I continue to be cool? Or just fade away from obscurity?

Well I am starting to like the more sociable me. I have tons of new twitter and facebook friends and I didn't even have to leave the house! ;)

No, its time to up the anti. I am now targeting the words "Coolest Guy" and am looking to position myself on the top.

I have the domain name "http://coolestguyongoogle.com" currently pointing to this blog. But in the next few days I hope to build another site linking to the blog.

Why? Blogspot, while easy to use, has its limitations. And now that I am making some progress, why not set up another site and achieve number one and number two rankings for "coolest guy on Google"? More results in the search engines, more visitors, right?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-1631471314684235392009-07-19T03:44:00.000-07:002009-07-19T04:03:44.329-07:00Overlooking the obviousAll my work on building profiles and I forget the most obvious profile of all!

Google.

It wouldn't be fair of me to be the Coolest Guy on Google and not have a Google profile now, would it?

http://www.google.com/profiles/jezhug

With Google profiles, you can add as many of your websites as you want!

What does this mean? I have three sites for you to try. About a month ago I never knew these sites existed! But now I am hooked. You can re-spin some content from your existing blog or website and link it back to your site for more information on the subject.

Why use these sites? Three good reasons:

You can pass on your valuable knowledge and get your name noticed by a huge number of readers.

You can link the information back to your website and turn the reader into a potential customer or subscriber.

You can gain revenue from ads on these articles!

Revenue? I hear you say! Yes. You can put your own Google Adsense code in and sell items from Amazon related to your subject!

These are the sites:

http://hubpages.com/profile/Jezhug
http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/Jezhug
http://www.redgage.com/Jezhug

Redgage is a nice one for getting visitors to your Hubpage Hubs or Squidoo Lenses!

Well, that's enough for me today. I will be far too busy filling these sites with my content. Hope to see you there!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-16613260920416298162009-07-17T23:42:00.000-07:002009-07-18T00:46:16.820-07:00Coolest Guy on Google updateNow that I have a semi-cool picture I have started to work on my social network profiles.

I have done a quick Google today and have hit the number 3 spot for "coolest guy on google", minus the quotes.

Also, my feedage site feed came in at number 5!

This is not bad considering that I am not a full-time internet marketer. I have a full time job and plenty of hobbies, plus my extremely busy social life!.....OK, so the social life is a small stretch of the truth, but I am proof that you don't need a fancy marketing degree or have years of search engine optimization training to hit it with Google. All you need is a couple of hours here and there and follow a few simple rules and you will get there every time.

Today, I have been playing around with MySpace, which now has a new interface which seems pretty cool! I have ignored MySpace in the past, but not anymore. I have my new pic up and will be slowly adding new content to saturate the search engines with.

The more links to your site you can get online, the more you can build your brand. I liken this to a dog marking his territory!

This cute dog here will demonstrate my point ;)
He is off on his daily 40 minute walk stopping at about 28 trees to leave his scent on! Now, as soon as he gets home and is curled up asleep in front of an open fire, another dog, say a German Shepperd walks along the same track. The German Shepperd (your competitor), smells the scent then tries to conceal it with it's own.

This does not phase the little dog. Why? Because he is consistent!

The little dog will do the same walk he looks forward to every day and claim what is rightfully his tomorrow!

Moral of the story: You don't need to spend all day pissing on trees.....

.....No, wrong moral. Consistency is the key! If you consistently build your online profile, brand or website, you will reap the rewards.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-3952428031371552712009-07-15T03:39:00.000-07:002009-07-15T05:40:50.913-07:00Getting cooler with social networkingI will just briefly go over my social networking sites and add more as time goes on. I still have plenty of work ahead of me, I need a cool picture! I cant just claim to be the coolest guy on Google and have such a lame picture of myself now, can I?

These are the sites I will use to increase my cool! Feel free to add me to your network.
www.twitter.com/Jezhug
www.facebook.com/Jezhug
www.friendfeed.com/Jezhug
www.myspace.com/Jezhug

Remember: By adding me, you will be cool by association! ;)

I will dedicate a few future posts out of getting the most out of the above sites. These types of sites can be a fantastic way to generate traffic! In this day and age, it's not just about having good positioning in the search engines that sell products. Sure it helps, but if you ignore social networking sites, you will be missing out on a huuuuuuuuge amount of traffic! I am not over exaggerating.

I often base my purchase decisions on recommendations from friends and family. Opinions from real people matter and that is why I swear by social networking sites. They are the cheapest (free!!!) and easiest form of marketing you will ever find.

If you have never used any social networking sites before, why not start today. If you want to get in touch with old friends try Facebook. Or if you want to make some new friends from all around the world, give Twitter a go.

Right! I have some real work ahead of myself working on these profiles! I will update you all with the transformations, including how you too can create awesome profile pages that will attract visitors.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-56316422962216402852009-07-11T21:05:00.000-07:002009-08-03T00:17:48.273-07:00Jezhug's cool new venture! Here is my plan. I have decided that anyone can be cool on the internet, regardless of your background. I am going to take steps to prove this point. What gave a relatively sane person like me this idea? Well I have to admit this is not a new concept. The current "coolest guy" is a top bloke named Brad Fallon.

I first heard about Brad when I attended the Ultimate Marketing seminar in Melbourne this year. At the Ultimate Marketing seminar I learned the importance of social networking and how it can be used as a valuable tool to promote products.

When I got home, I set up my twitter account and re-vamped my facebook account. I decided I wanted to add like minded people, people driven to succeed. So I did that....and added a couple hundred more interesting people! I was surprised that when I added Brad Fallon, he added me back! I got this intriguing message straight back!

The link brought up a Google search for the natural search term of "coolest guy". Two of Brad's web site links were firmly set on top.

Now, the other main thing I learned at the Ultimate marketing seminar, was the importance of having your own information products. Something I was quite keen to try.

But I asked myself, who would want my products? Would I buy my own products? If I was as cool as Brad, yeah, no question. So in a snap decision, I decided to be cool!

This blog will track my journey to become the coolest guy on Google. An ordinary person with a dream! My story will hopefully inspire others build on their web site success.

Now I don't expect it to happen overnight, this will be a long-term project. Maybe for now I should set my sites lower and just try to grab the title of the "second coolest guy" on Google?

Anyway, Game on Brad Fallon!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00912058100391496844noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-455276069686410865.post-75717643164096524932009-07-04T03:02:00.000-07:002009-08-03T00:21:05.033-07:00Howie's IM Remarkable 10 day challengeStep 1: Picking my niche

I decided to pick diabetes as my niche as my work recently sent me to a seminar on the subject. Still armed with my slideshow presentation notes, I feel I can get a good three articles up before the IM Remarkable challenge finishes.
Now I have started a few days later than most, so my strategy is to get a great unused domain name that I should be able to get in the top spot for that natural search.

Step 2: Keyword Research

In a recent Marketing seminar I attended, James Schramko recommended Google Insights. This 100% free tool is fantastic for exploring keyword options.

I tried a number of search queries, but eventually found one that I could get a top level domain name for. The domain name I purchased was http://educationfordiabetes.com which was on the top of the list for my niche using the keywords “education” and “diabetes”. Also the phrase “education for diabetes” appeared in the top rising searches, so this domain name could also be quite valuable in the future.

A Google search confirmed that I have a popular phrase and a lot of competition, 27,800,000 to be exact. But I still think I can get it to the top in the next 5 days!

This is what currently comes up when I type “education for diabetes” into the Google search engine before my cool site was designed and launched.

Step 3: Site Setup

There were a few steps involved for this project:

Purchase the domain name

Connect the domain name to my hosting account

Install Joomla Content Management System

Install additional Joomla extensions for search engine optimization

Added a custom site template to go with the image I am trying to create

Step 4: Articles

This would have to be my toughest challenge as I am more into the technical side of websites. From my keyword research I found a few common searches that I would try to include in the article titles. These words were “Diabetes Symptoms”, “Facts about Diabetes” and more of a niche of my niche, “Diabetes Wound Care”.

Hey, I just thought of another good one “Free Diabetes Software”!

I also chose to add a few existing free articles from http://www.articlesbase.com/ to boost my content and to make up for my lack of writing talents!

Now that I have a bit of content, it is really starting to shape up!

Step 5: Spicing it up!

Today I have been busy! Modified the template a bit and and added some free royalty free pictures to spice up my site a bit. Got my free diabetes images from here http://www.sxc.hu/ Next a bit of technical stuff to let everyone know where to find me:

Metatag verifications in Google, Yahoo and Bing

Sitemap creation

Submit sitemap to major three search engines

Auto submit web to search engines

Social bookmarking etc.

The site is starting to look hot! Still has a few blank areas that will be filled with PPC over the next couple of days.

Step 6: Money, Money, Money

Just set up an Amazon shop for my site! The products are directly related to my niche subject, diabetes. I have included all sorts of cool items like Books, DVD's and Magazines related to diabetes!

Check it out here: http://educationfordiabetes.com/index.php/Diabetes-Products.html

A bit more site promotion, and I can kick back and wait for the money to come in ;)

Step 7: The waiting game

Ok, normally I allow two weeks to get most of my pages in Google. I haven't left myself much time! I have one page on Google, but waaaaayyyyy down on the list!

While there is still plenty of time left, I am not sure if Google will come to the party! Time to get a little help from my old friend Google Adwords.

I have put $10 for one day (Ooooh! $10! Last of the big spenders) in the hope some extra clicks might speed up indexing my pages in Google.

Thinking back, I think the key mistakes I made on this challenge were judgment errors. I spent more time on the building of the site than the content. By using the free articles it did not win me many favors with Google! Had I put more original content, I believe I could have had more pages indexed by now.

Still, it has been a great learning curve for me. Regardless of the challenge outcome I would like to emulate my site's formula across the other 35 niches! This is more of a long term project, maybe one website a month.

I have attached my most recent Google Analytics data for you all to see my progress. It looks quite promising. Google Analytics Data.

Don't forget to check out my site also, not much to be done and quite a professional looking site for a few hours spanned over a couple of days! http://www.educationfordiabetes.com

Step 8: Race to the End

Now I am lest than optimistic about receive that top rank as the hours melt down, however, I still think in a few more day's that this site will be a great little money maker!

I may have lost the IM Remarkable battle, but I am confident I can win the war.

Tonight I have added a hub to Hub Pages. Probably should have done this much earlier, but time got away from me. I was surprised just how easy it was. Wont hold back next time, love the affiliate integration with Hub pages, it's fantastic!

Here is my Hub: http://hubpages.com/hub/Education-for-Diabetes

Now on to Squidoo: http://www.squidoo.com/education-for-diabetes

Here is my latest Google Analytics, showing some promise!

Challenge Summary

Well, the challenge is well and truly wrapped up by now, but now I am armed with a head full of new ideas and ways I can do it better in the future.

I had a bit of success in Google and Bing, but not for my natural search words. I know I will get there soon, the only way is up! Looking forward to starting a new site soon from Howie's 10 Extra Niches book!

Looking forward to seeing how everyone else will go now that the challenge is over. I feel like a magician with a full bag of tricks, ready to jump head first into niche markets I have absolutely no prior knowledge on.
